Ten on Tuesday

1. It's really late and I can't sleep. This should make for an interesting Ten on Tuesday post.

2. I have a stress fracture in my pelvis. A what? Yeah, that's what I said. Who gets things like this? (That would be me.) I was training for a half marathon in three weeks, so that's out the window.

3. The weather has been in the nineties this week and the kids have no AC! It is SO HOT for them!! Other schools are getting out early, but not ours!

4. Max is doing good in kindergarten but I really wanted him to come out of his shell a little this year. He sits next to the foreign kids who SPEAKS ZERO ENGLISH. Let's just say it is not helping the situation.

5. Okay, I will try to be more positive...I had an awesome birthday lunch with my friend, Susy, today at a fun, quirky restaurant. The food was yummy and all organic, from the local area, kind of thing... We do have some gems in this Ohio place of ours.

6. Every year for a while now, Zoey and Ross go walking around Target right before my birthday and just search for little gifts for me! I love it! I also love hearing Ross tell me about it later. He says Zoey talks the entire time and considers all kinds of purchases and remembers lots of conversations I've had with her! Sometimes they bring me fun snacks, sometimes a cute purse and a doggie card! Did I mention already that I LOVE IT!!

7. August just flew by! I like the fall though and look forward to the colors that come with it!

8. Were playing with dominoes the other day...

9. I like this one of Zoey while she concentrated...

10. And to finish on a really random note...
LUNA MOTHS... these suckers are about 4 1/2 inches across and are only in the adult stage for about 12 hours, so its kind of rare to see, and they totally freaked me out at first!!

Birthday Love

I had a nice birthday this weekend.

The kids were so cute and would break out in song every once in a while.

I got to eat out a bunch so no cooking or clean up, Yay!

One meal was fondue... mmmm...mmmm... Chocolate and cheese, what more can a girl ask for?

Lots of birthday kisses...

I couldn't ever get enough of those!

School Days, School Days

Here is our newest THIRD GRADER! Sporting her pigtails and jeweled shirt...

And our big Kindergartener!!! Wearing 'my favorite color is green' shirt

IMG_5158

The kids started school on Tuesday. And then Max doesn't go again until Friday. They let the K kids come in small groups for the first three days!
They both have nice teachers so it should be a fun year! I was having a harder time than I thought I would with Max entering Kindergarten, but when the day actually came and I told him it was time to go, he grabbed his backpack, headed to the car and yelled, "Come on Mommy, I'm all ready for Kindergarten!" So, I guess I am too!

Here's to a great school year!

Butterflies

Besides the whole Monet Bridge, our purpose when visiting the Cox Arboretum the other day was actually to see the Butterfly house that is "in season" at the moment.

It didn't fail us! We saw lovely butterflies...

IMG_5053

IMG_5058

IMG_5059

BUT it was Hot! And Max is a little grumpy when he is overheated so we didn't stay too long admiring the butterflies!

So we headed out to the hedge maze for a bit...

There is a town in Ohio that claims to have the most perfect tree... I don't know the details of it, but I think this one looks pretty good...

Hot kiddos:
I think that is dried sweat around his mouth!
IMG_5103

And Zoey gets little sweat droplets on her nose just like me!

I actually planned for the heat, sort of... I brought their insulated water bottles and a little snack, but it was gone quick and we were still hot and thirsty! Oh well, any excuse to hit Starbucks for an iced tea and those petite vanilla bean scones works for me!!

Speaking of heat... Max didn't want to go in to the store the other day. He said he would just stay in the car. Not that I would leave him in the car on a cool day, but I told him not today because the car gets so hot it is like an oven!

Well, the kids haven't forgot that, and they are always asking me if it is an oven before they get it. Well, the other morning it hadn't heated up yet, so Zoey said, "It's only a toaster oven, so we are good!"

Monet in Ohio

Growing up in Europe provided many opportunities that just wouldn't have happened if I lived in the US. One such opportunity was a field trip to France when I was in ninth grade. It was not meant to be your typical, see all the tourist spots, type of trip. We stayed in some dorms of students who were on a break and went to a bunch of impressionist artists museums (think Claude Monet and Rodin). That was it! A week spent in Paris museums! It was very cool and left an impression (Ha!) on me. To this day, I love impressionist paintings, especially Monet.

So, fast forward to today... I took the kids to Cox Arboretum to see the butterfly house! One of the gems of our local area is its Metroparks System, and this Arboretum is part of that. They include gardens, arboretums, marketplaces, and historical farms. We have been to a lot of them and I am always pleasantly surprised by how well they are taken care of and the beauty the provide. Well, wouldn't you know, they have a "Monet Bridge" and surrounding area that replicates this painting!

I was a little bit excited since I actually had my camera!

Here is my ode to Monet in Ohio:)

Kid Quotes and Splash Fountain

I have been talking a lot lately about the kids growing up and changing so quickly... but they still have their moments where they say something not quite right and it is so cute. I didn't want to forget...

Ross and I took the kids to Lowes to pick up a few things. It has been really hot and humid lately, so much so that you don't even notice the stores being overly air conditioned, (or maybe it was broken.) Either way, it was Hot! So at the check out Ross grabbed a Gatorade. The kids wanted some too, so they each got their own. After we got back in the car and Max had taken some big gulps, he exclaimed, "AHHHH, Gator Juice is Gooood!"

I mentioned that Gatorade might be fun to have at soccer when it starts in a week or so, and Zoey started to talk about last season and the teams they won or lost against. She said, "Do you remember when we SLOBBERED that pink team?"

And in the heat, the only way to beat it is water, right? We have been going to the pool, or to parks with splash-pads, or to the fountain at the outdoor mall (the Greene). At the Greene, we get snow cones, too! Double Fun!

I brought my camera this day to play around with shutter speed... It was fun.

Goofball!

Max is our resident goofball. He says things every day and I don't document them here because I forget. I think they are mostly "you had to be there" jokes, too, but I thought I'd try...

We were getting ready for the day and I had asked him to go brush his teeth and go to the bathroom. I thought I heard the water running and the toilet flush, so I figured he did both. He came wandering back into my room and I said to him, "I heard you go to the bathroom, but did you brush your teeth?"
He doesn't say anything and immediately turns around to walk out of the room.

To this, I replied, "Max, don't just walk away. You need to answer me."

He said, "First, I have to brush my teeth so that I can say YES."

And here he is just being silly in front of the camera...We were trying to get a picture of Zoey at this particular moment and he thought it was hilarious to step in at the last second. This picture captures the goofball in him a little bit!

I've Been There...

I'm a sensitive, over-emotional, wear my heart on my sleeve type of gal. For years, I hated that about myself. I would get in trouble or corrected at school and would have to fight back tears. I saw a dead dog on the side of the road one time and cried all the way home and then for hours after. I was once so sad at Thanksgiving because the guy on the radio was working and not able to celebrate! I sobbed through my wedding vows.

You get the idea.

Like I said, it was not my favorite part of myself. My achilles heel in a way. I needed to get thick skin and not be so sensitive! On the other hand, my parents would often remind me that because I feel the bad and sad stuff so much, I also feel the good stuff that much more as well. For that, I should be thankful. The tears that flow from good, happy times are worth those pesky other ones. I had to learn this on my own, however. A little before I met Ross, I worked with someone who was the very opposite of me in this respect. Over time, we talked about our thoughts on lots of things. At first I wanted to be more like him. He believed in God, but you could describe his emotional line as STRAIGHT! Mine would be more hills and valleys. After further conversation, I changed my mind and finally grasped what my parents had been saying. I didn't want to be like this guy. I would take the lows of the valley to feel the highs of the hills. I need to point out that this isn't that I am some emotional wreck, really:) It is just that I will cry when I hear your story of heartache and I will cry happy tears when something causes me to rejoice! I'm a crier, people! (although, admittedly it is sometimes embarassing)

So, although I had come to accept this about myself and even be thankful for it, I didn't want my kids to be SO much like me. When Zoey was a baby, I would think about who she would become and sort of hope that if she got any of me, it just wouldn't be that part! At least not to the same degree. Well, be careful what you wish for, right? She doesn't look like me. She doesn't act like I would in a lot of situations. BUT, she definitely has that emotional side. That, partnered with being quick to anger, makes this difficult sometimes! Especially because she is so young and the emotions are unfiltered and new.

IMG_4880
When you are new parents, it is fun to watch your children grow and point out features, both physical and otherwise, that come from yourself or your spouse. You can smile at the good, or place blame (he gets that from his father!). The funny thing is, when it comes to personalities, most people fit into really broad categories. Four main ones that are broken into four more, is usually what you see. You know the temperament disorders and personality type tests you take? Are you an introvert/extrovert? ISTJ? Sanguine? Melancholic? Whatever name you put on it, they are out there. Even if I fall middle of the road in some things, there are definite descriptions that are spot on in describing how I feel or react! Yes, you can overcome certain parts of your personality to be more successful in your job/relationships/etc. But it won't be as natural for you as maybe for another.

With this on the forefront of my brain, I had an epiphany the other day. It happens sometimes, and I excitely share my info with Ross whenever I see him and am certain that I will remember it and never write it down. And then I don't remember it in quite the way that I would have liked. I don't want that to happen this time! I had just finished a morning run and was walking and stretching (this is often when I get these epiphanies) when a thought popped in my head, "you/she are EXACTLY as God wanted." Hello, Holy Spirit! Right?

I know, that is not a new idea by any means. But thoughts continued and then it all perfectly made sense in my brain. I believe our children are a gift to us from God to take care of and hopefully help them on the path He has intended. Just as I believe that I am here for His purpose, either great or small, so are they. They are not mine to take "credit" for. So all that emotional stuff I have dealt with and learned to deal with and finally learned to embrace and appreciate... well, that just qualifies me to be the best mom for Zoey. She is who she is because of how God made her. How exactly and perfectly He made her. I am here to help her along the path, and the combo of Ross and me is the perfect one to do just that.

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded;
and from the one who has been entrusted with much,
much more will be asked.
Luke 12:48

I have been given much. I have been entrusted in much. I must now do what is asked, instead of question, or blame, or complain.

Since my little revelation, I have looked at my kids a little differently. I have marveled at their uniqueness and been humbled by the fact, once again, that most of this is beyond my comprehension anyway.

And, I don't think it stops with our kids either. The past, good and bad, the mistakes, the challenges, the successes, and the failures... You know the cliche, that it all happens for a reason.

You can look back and see the path was unfolding as it should for you. You can see growth come from times of trial. Appreciation and joy, from success. I think we should always take it further, pass it on. There are no words to describe the comfort you can give when someone is experiencing something (again, good and bad) and you reach out and put your hand on theirs and simply say, "I've been there, and I know."

Ten on Tuesday - 500!!

1. This is my 500th post!! I feel like I need to celebrate or something. Here are some balloons:

IMG_4009

2. I am sure you have been waiting in anticipation for this news as well - our dryer is working! YAHOOO!!! It was literally a FIVE dollar part. Nice.

3. So a cool thing about blogs and the whole internet, is how you *meet* others! Here is a big THANK YOU to Brooke! She is a friend of Tricia, who is my old friend from many moons ago:) She saw that Max loved Mario Bros. Her son had a Mario Party and had leftover hats! She sent one for Max! He was thrilled. THANKS AGAIN, Brooke! I love how you love your life and your people!!

IMG_4796

4. I have another fun and funky song for you!! (You love them, too, right?) Check out this one by Michael Franti and the Spearheads. Simple and Happy and FUN!

5. Zoey is in soccer camp this week and it couldn't be hotter or more humid. Ugh!

6. So, we got the iPhones and they are definitely cooler than I imagined! All those darn apps! We are still having fun. It helped while family was here to have games for the kids when we went to restaurants. Normally they love dining out, but under the circumstances, we were trying different places and having longer waits, so it came in handy!

7. Which leads me to this... what are your favorite apps? I am overwhelmed by them! But some of the ones I've gotten have been so helpful, that I would love your opinon! I don't have scraps of paper for grocery lists anymore and stuff like that! Do share...

8. We have a new little nephew! I got to take a couple of baby pictures for fun. Here is one of my favorites:

9. One of my favorite things about summer... Dinner from the grill:

10. And YAY! its August... My favorite month!! Enjoy your week, friends.
