Max has learned all of the states in a United States wooden puzzle, so we have been doing that a lot lately. Here are some funnies that have come up...
- We always say that Daddy is from Colorado and on the puzzle, Colorado has a guy skiing on it, so he just assumed the guy is Daddy. Well, to go along with that, there is a girl skiing on the state of Utah, so that atomatically became "Mommy". For the longest time I could not figure out why he kept calling Utah, Mommy... but now I know.
- Zoey asked, "Do they make a lot of pencils in Pennsylvania?" clever
- This one I love.. Max calls Louisiana "Oh Susanna" which is one of his favorite songs right now.
- And good old Massachusetts just gets called "MAX"
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Max Ehrmann

Zoey insights
Zoey and I were talking about people's ages the other day. She was asking about how old Max is and how old he was when we lived in Massachusetts. She always wants to know when her "five birthday" is coming because she knows that is when she gets to go to kindergarten and the school is right next to our house. She gets a little confused in talking and instead of saying, "when I will be 6..." she says "when I used to be 6" so I sometimes correct her and try to explain the mistake. Well after talking the other day she stopped all of a sudden with great excitement at her epiphany and said, "Mommy, there are still so many numbers that I haven't been yet!" I love her excitement about it. The months can't pass fast enough until the next big holiday or event. I am afraid after the long string from Christmas, Valentine's Day, even St Patrick's Day and Easter, she is going to be disappointed with what comes next! Cinco de Mayo anyone?? Some how fajitas and margaritas while wearing a sombrero don't go over too well with a four year old!! We'll still make it a fiesta!

Boys vs. Girls... The Tea Party
I am sure there are many arguments or thoughts on the differences between males and females. Whether or not there are inherent differences or if it is all just part of ones personality wasn't anything I spent time pondering. I thought a little bit about it after getting married and being "forced" to share space with a male, but not until we had both a daughter and a son, did I really start to see what people meant when they would say, "they are different, aren't they? boys vs girls."
It comes up all of the time, in little ways, especially with the way Max plays with more aggression or intensity. We certinly never described Zoey as a "girly girl" since early on she wasn't taken with dolls or princesses or playing dress up. She still loves her stuffed dog Buford more than anything else. Although she does like Polly Pockets dolls, she is more inclined to play with other things. She also is very aggressive and physical... but just not in the same way.
One thing Zoey does love is tea parties. We just bought a very inexpensive, ceramic set at IKEA the other day and she wanted to try it out. For the first time, Max was also interested, so he came to the little table we had set up outside and joined right in. Since this new tea set was ceramic (i.e. breakable) Zoey instantly new to be more careful. She did what I think most little girls would do- she held it very carefully and you could see she was playing the part of having a dainty tea party, almost naturally, like she just new that that was what you were to supposed do. Max, however, was to have no part in the delicate, careful, dainty ways of the tea party. (Ross is saying "of course, duh?" right now... Like why would I ever put the words dainty and Max in the same sentence.) Anyway, he stepped right up and wanted to pour the tea from the pot to the cup, but he just approached it so differently it was like an experiment of boys vs girls right before my eyes.
Zoey carefully held the handle with one hand and the lid with the other as she carefully poured the tea without spilling.
Max grabbed the pot on the side with one hand wrapped around it and after realized the lid would fall off as he poured, moved his hand to the top so he could hold both the lid and pot together and poured and poured and poured filling the cup to the brim, not caring about any spills. Here is a picture of the male way to pour tea:

I don't know if it was the male in him or the Max in him, but very cute all the same.

One very LONG week...
I can't believe that it has been a week since my last post. And only a week since Easter!! We have had quite an adventurous time...
Tuesday Ross had surgery on his elbow... I will post some before and after pictures soon! We had to get up at 5 am and drive him to UCLA. Poor Zoey got carsick on the way home and threw up twice. We got home and cleaned her up and waited to go back and pick up Ross. LA traffic is pretty crazy any time of the day, but especially on the 405 freeway that is under construction. So the kids and I were back in the car for another two hours to go and get Ross and bring him back home. As Ross slept through the afternoon, poor Max was getting sick. We didn't really know until we decided to get some dinner and he threw up all over himself!! And then the fever came. Anyway, to make a long story short, the next day we took him to the ER after another scary vomit and found out the poor guy had pneumonia and both ears infected. On a lighter note, at the ER they gave him some Tylenol with Codeine because he was in so much pain. As soon as that got into his system, he was another kid... he went from crying to singing like an old drunk guy!! He was just chatting and singing away and as we were leaving he was saying, "Goodbye everyone, Goodbye Max, Goodbye!" It was very cute and a little stress relieving considering our morning.
As Max slowly improved, our week continued and Zoey then started getting a fever. It was Friday and I didn't want to head into the weekend with her getting sick so we took her to the doctor... she had infected tonsils!! So after many sick days and up all night with several vomitting episodes... I hope we are on our way to recovery!! Last night was our first full nights sleep for everyone. So, that is why I haven't been blogging! It is times like these that we sure miss being around our family for just some extra support. We love and miss you.
But to change the subject, here is a picture of Max, smiling before all the sickness happened:

Dora's Influence on Max
I was putting Max to bed last night and he was lying on his back picking his nose. It seems to be a boy thing, if you ask me... I always seem to catch boys picking their nose and then eating the contents they find, and Max is no exception. Sometimes he looks at me while doing it and says, "No NO NO!" And then laughs as he sticks his finger from nose to mouth. Anyway, he was messing with his nose in the dark and I put my face up close and we had this conversation:
Me: "Is that your nose?"
Max: "Nose"
As he is bringing his finger to his mouth, I say, "Max, don't eat your boogers!"
Max: "Eat boogers, Yum, Delicioso!"
That is Spanish for Delicious, according to Dora the Explorer. That is how Max is utilizing his spanish knowledge... to describe eating boogers. Lovely.

Just a little update
I haven't written in a while so I wanted to just a put an update. We have been very busy, but not doing too much. Ross made it home safely on Friday. The kids and I went to pick him up at the airport and they both had the biggest smiles. Max didn't know what to say for a little bit, but they quickly warmed up to him again. We have just been hanging out and doing lots of crafty things. We planted some flowers outside and made a Spring wreath and decorated an Easter Tree and Eggs. So I will post some pictures soon. Thanks to you all for the support while Ross was gone. It helped us all.
